The Republican Donald Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States on Wednesday, 6th November 2024. He is the second president in US history to win a second nonconsecutive term after Grover Cleveland, a Democrat who served as the 22nd and 24th US president starting in 1885.
He swept all seven swing states and won the Electoral College by 312 to 226. That’s the largest victory since 2012, when Barack Obama notched 332 to 206 (Trump’s 2016 victory was 304 to 227).
That was an extraordinary comeback for a former president who had refused to accept defeat four years ago, had sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol and had survived two assassination attempts.
His rival was the Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. After the alarm about Biden’s advanced age, the vice president Harris rose to the top of the ticket¹. She was the first woman of color to run for the White House. Trump’s victory against Harris marks the second time he has defeated a female rival in a general election (the previous time he won against Hillary Clinton).
Kamala Harris called Trump on Wednesday afternoon to concede the race and congratulate him. A short time later, Biden also called Trump to congratulate him and to invite the president-elect to the White House.
Trump is now working to staff up his second administration. Upon taking office again, Trump will work with a Senate that will now be in Republican hands, while control of the House hasn’t been determined yet.
In his victory speech, Trump vowed he would “govern by a simple motto: promises made, promises kept. We’re going to keep our promises”.
We will see if the new US president will keep his promises and, in the meantime, we wish him good work!
